Where the words come from

Why the text is scrambled Latin
Lorem ipsum is placeholder copy: it fills a layout with the shape and rhythm of real prose so that nobody reads the words instead of judging the design. The words are lifted from a passage of Cicero and shuffled, which is why they scan like Latin but mean nothing. Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar, traced them in 1994 by searching for the rare word consectetur; the filler in use today comes from Letraset transfer sheets of the 1960s, and the story that a printer invented it in the 1500s turned out to have no evidence behind it.
Why an inscription
The Roman capitals cut into the base of Trajan's Column in 113 AD are the ancestor of every capital letter you type: brushed on first, then cut with a chisel in a V-shaped groove so the light makes the letter. Placeholder text that pretends to be Latin belongs on a Roman stone, so each paragraph here is carved in, left to right.

What does the classic opening do?
Starts the text with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit", the opening everyone recognises as filler. Turn it off for text that should not announce itself.
