Lighter bags travel faster
Image files are heavy for the same reason luggage is: they carry more than they need. A photo from a phone is often 3 to 6 MB at 4000 pixels wide; a web page shows it at 1200 and the rest is dead weight. Compression works in two ways here. Resizing the longest side throws out pixels nobody will see, and quality trades invisible detail for a much smaller file: JPEG and WebP at 75 to 85 look the same as the original to almost everyone at a fraction of the size.
The allowance
Many forms and platforms set a limit: 200 KB for a profile picture, 1 MB for an upload, 100 KB for an email signature. Type it as the allowance and press Fit: the desk searches for the highest quality that lands under the limit at the chosen size, and the lamp turns green when the bag can be checked in.
Why a bag drop
A self-service bag drop weighs the bag on the belt, shows the weight on a display, compares it with the allowance and only then prints the tag and takes the bag away. That is exactly a compressor's job: weigh, trim, check, tag, deliver.
JPEG or WebP?
WebP is 25 to 35 percent smaller at the same quality and every current browser shows it. Choose JPEG when the file has to open in older software or an email client.
Why does PNG not get smaller with quality?
PNG is lossless; it has no quality knob. Resizing still helps. For photos, converting to JPEG or WebP is the real saving; keep PNG for screenshots, logos and anything with transparency.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The image is read, resized and re-encoded by your browser; the download is created there too.
